THE VIDEO INTERVIEW: HURTS

by Jan Schimmang on August 16th, 2010

A new chapter in Manchester’s tradition of Pop: Theo Hutchcraft and Adam Anderson have probably made one of the most controversial records of this year. “Happiness” by Hurts will be released on 27th of August. The duo is known for its single “Wonderful life” - a pathetic tribute to the sound the 80s playing with the fashionable aesthetic of the 20s. For some people all this is a fake reproduction of primitive metaphors, for other it is a well done homage of past decades which is set in a modern context. Popmat met the two men behind the hype for an video interview and ask about their visions of asthetic, the evolution of their songs and really important records.

This Aeroplane can’t fly

by Andreas Boettcher & Jan Schimmang on July 19th, 2010

The success of belgium producer / DJ duo Aeroplane keeps the world turning. After remixing some big players (”Doing a Robbie Williams mix was a surprise, he’s a big deal”) they had toured nearly everywhere around the world.

Finally there is a date for the debut album confirmed: “We Can’t Fly” will be released 27th of September via Eskimo Recordings. The title track as preview:

Meanwhile Stephen Fasano has left the project friendly. So it`s Vito De Luca who is the lonely captain on board. The songs between Cosmic Disco and Pop will feature i.e. Au Revoir Simone or Poni Hoax. Definitely one of the most appreciated records this year.

Fashion Geek: Sébastien Tellier about Yves Saint Laurent

by Andreas Boettcher & Jan Schimmang on July 7th, 2010

It`s Berlin Fashion Week.

Remember when Sébastien Tellier was wearing YSL at his great performance for the Eurovision Song Contest 2008? A few weeks later Popmat met him and talked about the grand monsieur of fashion who had died a few days ealier. In 2010 this little tribute is still timeless - with a lot of respect for the french style icon.

Tellier recently released the remix version of his last album “Sexuality” via Record Makers: you can download Kasper Winding`s Version of “Elle” for free. Plus: the label celebrates his 10th anniversary with some gimmicks on its homepage and this fine animation video.

JD TWITCH / OPTIMO

by Andreas Boettcher on October 27th, 2009

Once again we met Optimo and this time we talked with JD Twitch. At the beginning of 2009 he started the Label Optimo Music which is brilliant eclectic (yuk!) like their own mixing style. Listen to him which real representatives of industrial music are going to release a record on it and what projects you can expect in the future. Of course we wanted to know his blueprints in music and why they still love doing the weekly Optimo Clubnight in Glasgow - for the 12th year now - a night beyond all bounds and insane even for berlin nightclubbers.

Pop Campaign

by Andreas Boettcher on October 1st, 2009

We should call it “New Faces” here at Popmat. Pop Campaign is an Electronic Duo from Glasgow. Describing themselves as bright, right and ready for the fight against pretentious self importance that plagues the music industry today. We like charismatic projects and Bratwurst too. So listen to their story of the first DJ appearance they had. It’s not all about Techno in Techno-City and it could end up much funnier - and yes, if you stranded in Berlin as Anna and Mark are, this may happen to you. They recommend some great music you should own, just as this mp3.

Three man, three albums

by Andreas Boettcher & Jan Schimmang on February 19th, 2009

They started as DJ team and morphed to a band. The debut album “Nonsens in the dark” has wide range of influences. Call it synth pop with more stylistic dimensions featuring guest vocals by i.e. Samuel Dust (The Maccabees) or Brandon Curtis (Secret Machines). It will be released this spring. Prelude: which records do Filthy Dukes really appreciate?

“My classic three albums are …”

by Andreas Boettcher & Jan Schimmang on February 2nd, 2009

His album “Turning down water for air” plays between folk melancholie and electronic club appeal. Quite for sure that Jape will love that work as well. Feels like Elliot Smith meets New Order.

James Yuill about other good music:
